Overdentures Jupiter FL

Dental Implants date back to 600AD when the Mayans first used them. Of course, things have significantly evolved since then. For instance, overdentures are now available to help you regain your quality of life. Roy C. Blake III, DDS, MSD, Maxillofacial Prosthodontist is happy to be on the cutting edge of this industry around Jupiter, FL. Dr. Roy Blake believes there are some things you should know before receiving this treatment though.

What Overdentures Are

An overdenture is a removable prosthesis. It will either cover or rest on at least one of your remaining teeth or dental implants. This is a very practical way to prevent the loss of all your teeth, which is why it’s considered a preventive dentistry measure.

There are three types of treatment available here. The one that you use will depend on your specific needs. These include overdentures that are supported by your gums, bar-retained overdentures that are supported by implants, and fixed overdentures that are also supported by an Implant. We will discuss these treatments with you to determine which procedure is the best way to replace your missing teeth. Typically, most people are a good candidate for at least one of these procedures.

Benefits Of Overdentures

There are many great reasons why you should discuss getting overdentures with us. While we almost automatically think of aesthetics, there are many health benefits too.

Aesthetically, overdentures will help retain your face and its structure. This is important because when your jaw is unhealthy (as it is when you have missing teeth), the distance between your nose and chin will start shrinking. A natural process known as resorption, this makes your face look sunken, and you’ll look like you’ve aged prematurely.

When it comes to your health, you may be surprised to learn how overdentures can benefit you. There are two main ways they do so.

First, they’ll help you digest your food better. Unlike dentures that sometimes fit poorly, overdentures are more stable, so you can chew your food thoroughly, which lets your stomach work and your body absorb the food’s nutrients better.

Secondly, your jaw bone loss is slowed because overdentures stimulate it when you’re eating. This stimulation slows (possibly even stops) the resorption process that naturally occurs when you’re missing teeth.

Determining If Overdentures Are Right For You

Getting overdentures is a process that you must work through with us. This will begin with a consultation in which we’ll discuss the condition of your teeth (while performing a full dental exam) and your overall health history. That is also a great time to discuss why you’re unhappy with your teeth. As we have these discussions, we may also take some x-rays so that we can use them in determining and recommending what the best treatment option for you will be, and whether your insurance will cover it or if there will be any out-of-pocket expenses.
