Dental Bridges

Roy C. Blake III, DDS, MSD, Maxillofacial Prosthodontist wants you to know that the best solution when you’re missing all your teeth is complete fixed bridges. They’ll give you permanent replacement teeth that will provide you with a great smile that can truly improve your self-confidence. This is why you should become familiar with what they are and how they work.

What Complete Fixed Bridges Are

This is a full arch restoration. As such, it consists of dental implants, teeth that are prosthetically manufactured, and abutments (connecting elements). Typically, these teeth are made of materials like porcelain, which is very malleable so that it can replicate tooth enamel’s light-reflecting properties. It’s also strong enough to support the force of your bite. They’re supported by dental implants that rely on your bone’s structure.

Benefits Provided by Fixed Bridges

Your life will be greatly improved when you get a complete fixed bridge because it’ll function like your natural teeth. With it, you can eat and drink comfortably, as normal. You’ll also find that your speech won’t be affected because this appliance won’t slip around in your mouth. It also doesn’t feel bulky. These advances are all thanks to modern dentistry, which has made a complete fixed bridge almost as indistinguishable as your natural teeth. Additionally, this will help you retain your face’s natural shape since your jaw bone won’t deteriorate. You can enjoy all these benefits long-term (for decades, if not for a lifetime) thanks to the complete fixed bridge’s durability. However, it’s important to take care of your new appliance properly.

Undergoing the Complete Fixed Bridges Procedure

The entire process begins with a consultation during which we’ll perform a complete oral exam – including x-rays, 3D scans, and a review of your dental history. This will help us determine whether you’re a good candidate for a complete fixed bridge. If you are, we’ll create a treatment plan that you’re comfortable with.

Your consultation will be followed by two minor oral surgeries for which you’ll receive a local anesthetic, so you’re comfortable and not in pain. The first one is when we’ll remove any of your remaining teeth and make incisions for each of your implants – a total of 5 or 6. We’ll also place the implants securely in your jaw bone. This requires sutures that are removed a week later when we’ll also take an impression of your gums so we can make you a temporary bridge to use.

It’ll take you several months to heal from these surgeries. Only when your mouth has fully healed (properly fusing to your jaw bone) can you schedule your second surgery. This second surgery is when we reopen each of your incisions to expose your new implant. A collar is placed around each of these implants, so your gum doesn’t try to encapsulate it again while your mouth heals. You’ll need another appointment to remove these collars and place your abutments.

Caring for Your Complete Fixed Bridge

It’s easy to care for your complete fixed bridge since it’s no different from caring for your natural teeth. Make sure you brush and floss twice daily with a nonabrasive fluoride toothpaste. You should also make routine appointments with our office to maintain your new appliance. The first one will be shortly after getting it installed so we can make sure everything is working properly.
