What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a dental condition that displays through teeth grinding and clenching. In most adults it is a temporary condition that displays during periods of high stress, though it can also be present in children, and in patients who suffer from a wide variety of mental, intellectual and physical health problems. In most cases, the patient will subconsciously grind or clench their teeth, this is commonly done while sleeping, though it can also be done during waking hours, but it generally done unintentionally, so it’s a hard condition to stop.

As the patient grinds or clenches their teeth they are potentially and increasingly causing damage to their teeth. This damage can be painful and expensive. Some results may be immediate, other damage may go unnoticed until larger issues such as enamel loss or infection occurs. There are symptoms that you can look for, this includes:
•  Pain, Soreness or Tiredness in Your Jaw: If you find that you are waking with a jaw that feels like its been working out, you may be experiencing bruxism. A common result of bruxism is jaw issues, many dentists look for TMJ dysfunction, which is disorders with your jaw joint, in addition to bruxism. Clenching and grinding your teeth can be quite strenuous for your jaw.
•  Teeth Fractures or Breakage: Though problematic, tiny hairlines fractures can be missed, but if you have experienced breakage to a tooth, or wake up noting a chipped portion of your tooth, you may be experiencing bruxism. During your checkup appointments, hopefully your family dentist will take note of any breakage or fractures that they can see. Tiny hairline fractures can be missed, but bacteria can find its way into the cracks, causing decay and infection inside the tooth.
•  Flattened Teeth: Grinding your teeth over an extended period can have a similar effect to having your teeth sanded, they get worn down. Bruxism can cause patients to lose the important chewing surface of their teeth. Besides the loss of the crushing and tearing portion of your teeth, the patient also loses significant enamel leaving dentin exposed. This can be painful and problematic for the patient.

What Is A Nightguard?

A nightguard is a silicone device that you can wear over your teeth. This provides a barrier layer between the teeth, helping protect them from damage. Having your nightguard customized allows the patient to have a device that fits properly in your mouth, it shouldn’t be bulky or uncomfortable. Having a properly fitted device means that you are much more likely to wear it, meaning the nightguard can do its job.
